uPVC (unplasticized polyvinyl chloride) and aluminium are the two dominant frame materials for modern windows and doors in India, and the choice usually comes down to a handful of genuinely different trade-offs rather than one material being simply "better."
uPVC frames are typically multi-chambered — hollow internal sections that trap air, which is what gives uPVC its strong thermal insulation. Aluminium is a naturally strong metal, which lets it hold its shape in much thinner frame profiles than uPVC needs for the same structural strength.
Where each one tends to win
uPVC
- Won't rust, rot, or corrode — a real advantage in humid or coastal climates
- Stronger thermal insulation in most standard profiles, which can help with both heating and cooling costs
- Low maintenance — no repainting or resealing on a fixed schedule
- Generally quieter, thanks to the multi-chamber construction and typically thicker frame
Aluminium
- Slimmer frames for the same structural strength, meaning more visible glass area
- Higher strength-to-weight ratio, which matters for very large openings
- Naturally fire-resistant
- Can be painted or powder-coated in a wider range of finishes after installation
What actually determines the right choice
For most residential windows and doors — bedrooms, living rooms, standard balconies — uPVC's insulation and low maintenance make it the more common choice. For very large openings, commercial storefronts, or situations where a slim, minimal frame is a real design priority, aluminium's strength-to-weight advantage becomes more relevant.
Neither material is inherently the "premium" or "budget" option — cost depends heavily on the specific profile, glazing, hardware, and fabricator, not just the base material. Get quotes for your actual opening sizes before assuming one material costs more than the other.
A note on quality within each material
The material is only part of the story. A well-made uPVC window from a careful fabricator will outperform a poorly installed aluminium one, and vice versa. Profile brand, glazing thickness, hardware quality, and installation care all matter — which is part of why checking who you're actually buying from matters as much as the material itself.
