Why uPVC needs so little maintenance — and what "little" still means
One of uPVC's genuine advantages is low maintenance compared to wood or untreated metal. It doesn't need repainting, doesn't rot, and doesn't rust. But "low maintenance" isn't "no maintenance" — a small amount of regular care meaningfully extends the life of both the frame and the hardware.
Cleaning the frame
A soft cloth with warm water and mild soap is enough for routine cleaning. Avoid abrasive scrubbers or strong solvents, which can dull the surface finish over time. Most manufacturers recommend against using bleach-based cleaners directly on the frame.
Checking the seals
The rubber gaskets that seal the window or door when closed are the main wear part on an otherwise low-maintenance system. Over years of opening and closing, they can compress, harden, or develop small gaps. A simple check: close the window and look for daylight or feel for a draft along the seal line. Seals are typically replaceable without replacing the whole frame.
Hardware — hinges, handles, locks
Moving hardware is mechanical and benefits from occasional attention. A small amount of silicone-based lubricant (not oil-based, which can attract dust and grime) on hinges and locking mechanisms once or twice a year keeps them operating smoothly. A handle that's become stiff or a lock that needs extra force to turn is usually a sign it's due for this.
Drainage channels
uPVC window frames typically include small drainage channels (weep holes) that let rainwater that gets into the frame track drain back out, rather than pooling inside. These can collect dust or debris over time. A quick check and clear-out during general cleaning prevents water from sitting where it shouldn't.
When to call a fabricator instead of DIY
Seal replacement, hardware adjustment beyond basic lubrication, and any sign of the frame itself shifting or not closing flush are all worth a call to a fabricator rather than a DIY fix — especially if the window or door is still under warranty, where unauthorized work can sometimes affect coverage.
